Art Collective

The Art Collective introduces and engages students to the thriving art scene on the university’s campus and greater Philadelphia area. In such an academically rigorous school, SPEC Art Collective acts as an outlet for students to relax, interact with art, and participate in activities their normal class schedules would not allow for them. In the past we have been able to accomplish this by hosting a variety of art related events. For example, this past year we organized a tote making workshop, exhibition tours throughout museums in Philly and DC (at Yayoi Kusama’s exhibit!), brought in speakers for a careers in arts panel, and hosted various other speakers such as renowned artist Sarah Meyohas. This year we aim to expand these events and reach an even greater audience. So far, we are working on creating an art related career fair and networking event, curating exhibitions in the Fox Art Gallery with student art, host pop-up workshops on Locust Walk, and collaborating with some of the other art groups on campus.
Getting involved in the art collective is a great way to be involved in the arts on Penn’s campus. It gives students the opportunity to arrange activities that also interacts with the greater art community, and a platform to meet other art-minded people. It also provides a space to discuss and discover different careers in the arts through planning career events and attending them. The Art Collective also gives space for student artists to display their work and gain more visibility in the community. The Art Collective consists of different committees to help it run: the marketing team, social media team, speakers team, design team, and the Fox Art Gallery team. Want to help run social media or create graphics? Want to take the lead for campus events? Whatever your talents or desires are, you can contribute your skills and passion to the Art Collective!

Directors

Yasmin Gee

Hi! I am Yasmin and am a Director of the Art Collective. I am a senior majoring in Art History and minoring in Journalistic Writing. I particularly love Contemporary Art as I find it extremely fun and dynamic; me pictured with the Keith Haring above is a perfect example. Exploring museums and other art around Philadelphia is a big pastime of mine and when I am not doing this, you can usually find me eating

Melissa Mazza

Hi! I’m Melissa, an assistant director for the SPEC Art Collective. I am a rising junior in the college majoring in Visual Studies and minoring in Middle Eastern Studies. Growing up I always loved to draw and paint, but since arriving at Penn I have feel in love with studying contemporary art. Nothing makes me happier than spending a day at a museum or gallery, or traveling to a new city.

Amy Juang

Greetings! I’m Amy, also a Director for the Art Collective. I am a sophomore planning to major in Visual Studies and minor in English. I love to explore different mediums when I make pieces, but in my free time I relieve my stress with a uniball fine tipped pen and paper. Contemporary art museums are my favorite, and lately I have been drawn to big installations that challenge the way I view my environment. Not only is art fun to make and interact with, but I believe it is essential for academic development and human character.
